Overview

At JCDS, learning is a joyful journey that grows with your child. From the wonder and exploration of Pre-Kindergarten to the confident leadership of fifth grade, our curriculum nurtures curiosity, builds strong foundations, and foster independence every step of the way.

Pre-K 3 and Pre-K 4

Wonder Begins

Our Pre-K 3 and Pre-K 4 program provides the Best Possible Start for your child through an approach inspired by the Reggio Emilia philosophy and enriched with the timeless foundations of classical education.

We believe that play is serious learning. As children explore, create, collaborate, ask questions, and solve problems together, they develop the confidence, curiosity, and critical thinking skills that prepare them for future academic success.

These early years are intentionally designed to nurture a lifelong love of learning while building the strong social, emotional, and developmental foundations that make the transition to Kindergarten both natural and exciting.
    • “Play is fundamentally important for learning 21st century skills, such as problem solving, collaboration, and creativity.” ~ American Academy of Pediatrics

Kindergarten

Confidence Grows

Kindergarten is where curiosity begins to take shape as confident learning. It serves as a gentle and exciting bridge between the play-based world of Pre-K and the more structured elementary years. Your child’s day becomes more organized as they begin the joyful process of learning to read and write.

At the same time, we nurture social-emotional growth through positive character education, helping children develop kindness, resilience, and strong friendships.

By the end of the year, Kindergarteners are confident and well-prepared for the big step into first grade.

Grades 1-2

Skills Take Root

In first grade, students take on greater responsibility while their reading and writing skills grow rapidly. They develop important life skills and build a solid understanding of the base-10 number system using Singapore Math strategies that make concepts clear and meaningful.

By second grade, students become increasingly independent as they engage in hands-on, interdisciplinary learning that connects ideas across subjects. Experiences with science, Spanish, technology, and fine arts enrich their learning and encourage creativity and curiosity.

These years build the confidence, independence, and academic foundation students need as they prepare for the greater challenges and opportunities of the upper elementary grades.

Grades 3-4

Active Partners in Their Own Learning

Third graders shift from learning to read to reading to learn, using literacy as a powerful tool to explore ideas across subjects. This exciting stage is marked by a meaningful transition: third graders move to a different wing of campus and receive their very own lockers for the first time — a proud symbol of their growing independence and responsibility.

Fourth graders engage in more advanced, inquiry-based lessons that encourage deeper thinking and exploration. One of the most memorable highlights of their entire elementary experience is the immersive space unit in the science lab. To support their expanding curiosity and projects, fourth graders receive personal iPads that they use in class and can take home for to support research, creativity, collaboration, and responsible digital citizenship both at home and at school.

Grade 5

Leaders Emerge

As the capstone of the elementary experience, fifth grade challenges students with higher-level thinking, stronger leadership opportunities, and increasingly complex work in reading, writing, mathematics, and the sciences.

By year's end, they leave JCDS well-prepared academically, socially, and spiritually for the transition to middle school—and equipped with the confidence and character to thrive wherever they go next.
