First Graders Create Books!

by Michael Porter
Students combine tech with creativity and writing skills.
The first graders used their iPads for the first time in the Tech Lab in October, exploring the app Book Creator. This app allows the students to create original stories using the speech-to-text feature to put their words on the pages.

The students use stylus pens to illustrate and use the camera feature to take pictures of the world around them to incorporate into their books.

At the end, students will be able to print and take a physical copy of their book home.

Computer Science and Technology Integration Specialist Cristina Knodel provides a measured balance between screen time and traditional education tools. The Book Creator app is a logical bridge between the two.

"By engaging with technology in a hands-on, constructive way, children develop digital literacy—essential competencies for success in our increasingly digital world," said Ms. Knodel. "Encouraging kids to harness the potential of these devices empowers them to be active participants in their education, fostering a mindset of innovation and exploration."
